HARRY BELL

 Having participated in the provincial tournaments, Harry conceived of the idea of the Blue Coats tournament. His concept was that a fours tournament should be held once a year with each team having at least one provincial or ex provincial player. Th tournament was to be competitive with high quality bowls but with a big emphasis on sportsmanship and camaraderie. The motto developed for the tournament was “Fellowship Above All”. The name derives from the blazers that all the provincial teams wore in the days that Harry played. Harry played for Southern Transvaal who wore blue blazers and hence the tournament was given the name of the “Blue Coats” With Harry’s passing, as a tribute to him, the tournament was also recognised as “The Harry Bell Memorial Tournament”

HARRY BELL MEMORIAL

 It was initially held at Salt Rock where it was staged for many years. The tournament was then moved to Scottburgh and it has been played there ever since, with Scottburgh proving to be a very good venue. The “Fellowship Above All” philosophy is still followed and the tournament is known for the wonderful spirit in which it is played. A number of prizes are given each year, to recognize achievements, for fun events and to keep interest going throughout the tournament.
